T-Mobile Nexus 4 Will Support WiFi Calling After All

After previously seeing the upcoming Nexus 4 on T-Mobile will likely not have WiFi calling, it appears that it will after all. T-Mobile Support recently outlined the full data features of the devices and lo and behold– full WiFi calling is indeed supported. All that’s needed is for T-Mo customers to get a specialized GBA SIM card, register a 9-1-1 address and turn on the phone’s WiFi and connect to a WiFi network. All in all— while the pricing of the device is somewhat absurd on-contract, at least T-Mo customers will be able to save many of those precious monthly talk minutes which is a good thing, right?

Samsung delivers kernel source for T-Mobile Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 and AT&T Galaxy Express

In an attempt to keep up with its incredibly quick release schedule, Samsung has officially delivered the source code for a duo of new devices. Both the Galaxy Express on AT&T and the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 on T-Mobile are the newest members to join the kernel source club, meaning stable custom ROMs could be on the foreseeable horizon. So, if you’ve got either of these two devices and consider yourself a tinkerer, you can hit the source link below to get in on the developmental action.

MetroPCS hits the 1 million LTE customer mark, makes $193 million profit in third quarter

In news that I’m sure will be pleasing to T-Mobile, MetroPCS has hit the one million mark in subscribed LTE customers (about 11% of its customers) and have also turned a profit of $193 million, even though they lost over 300,000 customers in the third quarter. How does one manage to turn such a profit while losing so many customers? MetroPCS credits “cash-saving exercises”, timely investments, and reducing a top priority of cell companies – churn. I’m sure a lot of MetroPCS and T-Mobile customers alike are wondering what the merger has in store for them. Hopefully it’ll end up benefitting the customer in some form or fashion.

T-Mobile to offer marked up Nexus 4 on contract alongside Nexus 7 plans

After Google announced the GSM-only Nexus 4 and new, data-enabled Nexus 7, it seemed like the devices would only be available unlocked through the Google Play store to be used on GSM carriers, such as T-Mobile and AT&T. In a bold move, it appears that T-Mobile will be offering the Nexus 4 like any other contract device. On November 14th, the 16GB model of the handset will be $200 with a two-year contract.
The device is offered through T-Mobile’s value plans, so your plan will cost an extra $20 per month for 20 months. Sounds good, right? Well, the math on that comes out to $600, which is quite a bit higher than Google’s asking price. It’s understandable to pay a bit more per month for a subsidized phone, but in this case, it’s a stretch. This could mean T-Mobile is trying to bring in a little extra cash on the Nexus hype, or Google is just willing to sell the device at a loss, which they have done before on other Nexus devices.

T-Mobile cancels NYC event scheduled for Monday evening

T-Mobile
T-Mobile has announced they are canceling their launch event that was scheduled for Monday evening in New York City. This really should be no surprise after Google canceled their own event on Monday and people throughout the northeast prepare for the “Frankenstorm.” T-Mobile indicates they will announce plans to reschedule the event at a later time.
We hope our readers who may be located in the path of the storm stay safe.

T-Mobile LG Optimus L9 dropping October 31st

Two weeks ago we revealed that the LG Optimus L9 would be available on T-Mobile’s network after a few leaked shots were revealed. Today, T-Mobile confirmed what we all like to hear – launch date and pricing. The Optimus L9 will launch on October 31st for $79.99 on a two-year contract with a $50 mail-in rebate. For this mid-range device, you’ll get modest specs:

There’s certainly a lot of competition in the mid-range market these days. What are your thoughts on this LG device? Will you opt for a different mid-range, or will you splurge for a premium device? After all, ’tis the season.

Details of ISIS Mobile Wallet emerge

ISIS is a Mobile Wallet application that was created by Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile. The product will initially launch on October 22nd in the selected markets: Salt Lake City, UT and Austin, TX. ISIS aims to be similar to Google Wallet as you’ll be able to turn your smartphone into a virtual wallet and use it in combination with your NFC-enabled device to pay for your purchases. Here’s some more details about ISIS:
  • Virtual Cards:  As expected, Isis will hold virtual versions of credit cards, an Isis Cash Card (prepaid card), store loyalty cards, and a section for special offers and promotions.
  • Bonus Cash:  When you first activate Isis, there will be a $10 bonus card for you to use. If you want even more cash, you can upgrade the Isis Cash Card to “reloadable” status which will land you an additional $15.
  • Security:  If your phone is lost or stolen, you can call Verizon and they will freeze Isis from working.
  • Merchants:  Isis will work at merchant locations that use Visa PayWave, MasterCard Paypass, Discover Zip, American Express and Google Wallet.
  • NFC-SIM Cards:  From what we have been told, Verizon will use new NFC-SIM cards on their Isis approved devices. We aren’t sure why they aren’t satisfied with simply using the on-board NFC chip, but this likely creates an additional level of security. It’s also a level of security that they can have intense control over, I would assume.
  • Devices:  The official “Isis ready” device is the DROID Incredible 4G LTE. As you will recall from this morning, the device is set to receive an update to make it Isis ready. Additional devices will be made available at a later time, but you should note that not all NFC phones can support Isis. If you live in a trial market and purchase an Incredible 4G LTE on or after October 22 (launch day), it will be activated with a new NFC-SIM card. If you already own an Incredible 4G LTE and live in a test market, you will be able to obtain an NFC-SIM to replace your current SIM.
  • Incredible 4G Purchase + $50 in Cash:  From October 22 to November 20, you can buy an Incredible 4G LTE and receive a $50 Visa Pre-Paid card. From what we understand, you will have to activate Isis and submit a rebate form in order to get the card.
What do you guys think about ISIS? Do you think it can compete with Google Wallet or do you guys see now use of this because of the availability of Google Wallet?

T-Mobile Announces The Galaxy S III Smartphone Is The Fastest-Selling Device Ever On Its Network

In something that should really come as no surprise, Samsung’s fastest selling device ever is now T-Mobile’s fastest selling device ever. T-Mobile took some and made this historic announcement on its Twitter page for all the world to see. Coupled with T-Mobile’s extensive 4G and Samsung’s own Next Big Thing campaigns, the Galaxy S III represents itself as T-Mobile’s phone to beat and flagship phone. One has to wonder though how the Galaxy S III will do once the intriguing (and sleek I may add) Galaxy Note II hits shelves in about a month’s time.

T-Mobile and LG officially announce LG Optimus L9

Well, now we can say that it’s official. Last week, we reported images of the LG Optimus L9 complete with T-Mobile branding were leaked. Today, T-Mobile and LG have officially announced its availability. LG is touting the device’s sleek, stylish, and thin frame (.36-inches thin) to go along with its 4.5-inch qHD display, 1GHz dual-core processor, and long-lasting battery. Pricing and a solid release date have yet to be announced, other than the vague “fall” release window. However, it’s safe to say that we’ll probably see the sleek device by November. If interested, you may also want to keep checking T-Mobile’s device page on its website since it may be listed as “Coming Soon” in the coming days. Hit the break for the full press release.

T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 Appears on FCC As SGH-T779

T-Mobile seems to often be late to the party when rolling out devices, or maybe it’s just my perception as an 11-year customer when they don’t offer a device I want on day-one like other carriers. However, T-Mobile seems to end up getting most of the same nice devices as the other major carriers eventually. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 is no exception in this case. Revealed through FCC filing, the newest tablet in T-Mobile’s stable will be released as the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 (SGH-T779). As is usually the case with device sightings on FCC, we will most likely see the Tab 2 on Magenta’s network within the next couple of months if not late next month. Is anyone looking forward to this particular tablet from T-Mobile? Let us know.

“Marvel’s The Avengers,” the No. 1 Movie of the Year, Will be Virtually Preloaded on All New and Existing T-Mobile Galaxy S III Smartphones Starting Sept. 25th

BELLEVUE, Wash. — Sept. 20, 2012 — T-Mobile USA, Inc., the No. 1 mobile operator brand in Samsung Galaxy S® sales, and Samsung Telecommunications America, LLC (Samsung Mobile),1 today announced new and enhanced features which will be added to all Samsung Galaxy S® III smartphones at T-Mobile®.

Expanding on the already robust entertainment and sharing features of the top-selling Galaxy S III, new and existing owners of the smartphone will receive “Marvel’s The Avengers” – the no. 1 movie of the year and 3rd biggest release of all time – as a virtual preload, available for download in the Samsung Media Hub, only at T-Mobile. Paired with T-Mobile’s new Unlimited Nationwide 4G Data plan, the new features make it easy for customers to stream or download unlimited video content, including their favorite movies and TV shows, without having to worry about data caps, speed limits or overages.

With today’s on-the-go lifestyle, an overwhelming majority (91 percent) of smartphone owners are using their devices for entertainment purposes for a wide variety of content – from YouTube clips and user-generated videos to feature films, games, music and more. In fact, a recent T-Mobile survey2 found this trend to be on the rise and more than one in 10 (11 percent) surveyed smartphone users rely on their smartphones so much for entertainment that they watch more video content on their devices than on their TVs.

“T-Mobile is committed to bringing leading-edge smartphone experiences to our customers by offering new features, including exciting content such as ‘Marvel’s The Avengers,’” said Brad Duea, senior vice president, product management, T-Mobile USA. “Whether our customers choose to stream or download content directly to their devices or share it to the big screen, as the only nationwide 4G network that offers an unlimited 4G data plan, T-Mobile is making it easier than ever to unleash all that the Galaxy S III has to offer.”

The third most-popular movie of all time, “Marvel’s The Avengers,” will be virtually pre-loaded on all T-Mobile Galaxy S III smartphones with this exclusive offer. The movie will be available in HD quality beginning Sept. 25 — the same day “Marvel’s The Avengers” becomes available on Blu-ray 3D, Blue-ray, DVD, digital and on-demand across the nation. T-Mobile customers can download “Marvel’s The Avengers” movie by visiting Samsung Media Hub on their Galaxy S III.3

“We are excited to partner with T-Mobile on this groundbreaking promotion and provide the highest-quality film experience for ‘Marvel’s The Avengers’ to Galaxy S III smartphone owners,” commented Dan Cohen, executive vice president, pay television and digital, Disney-ABC Domestic Television.

In addition, with a recent software update, Galaxy S III owners will be able to share licensed content, including TV shows and movies from Samsung Media Hub, wirelessly with AllShare Cast to any HDMI-capable TV with the addition of a new accessory, the Samsung AllShare Cast Wireless Hub.  The AllShare Cast Hub accessory will cost $99.99 and will be available via http://www.T-Mobile.com and in T-Mobile retail stores beginning Sept. 24.

To showcase the new features of the Galaxy S III, as well as T-Mobile’s full suite of Samsung Galaxy S devices, T-Mobile will introduce the Samsung Galaxy Zone in stores around the country this fall. The new interactive fixture will be rolled out in hundreds of locations and will provide an exclusive, enhanced retail experience for T-Mobile customers. The Galaxy Zone offers customers the opportunity to demo a Samsung device while using two television screens to visually supplement demonstrated device activity, such as AllShare Play, bringing to life the amazing experiences these devices offer.
