Mobile tech giant, Samsung, has always been one to push the envelope when it comes to developing exciting new advancements in technology, but its latest plans just might alter the future of the modern smartphone as we know it. According to the Wall Street Journal, Samsung is now in the final phase of development for its new flexible display technology, with plans to use them in consumer products in the first half of 2013. Samsung has accomplished this amazing feat by opting for plastic over glass, which not only makes the displays flexible, but lighter and less likely to shatter. The new screens are said to use Samsung’s OLED Technology which it is currently using in its top tier devices such as the Galaxy S III.
Samsung hopes to gain an edge on the competition who are also beginning to use new and innovative technology in their screens, such as LG’s Liquid Crystal displays and In-Cell touch technology. Samsung is more than likely investing big bucks on these flexible screens hoping that they will literally re-shape the way that we use our smartphones. Imagine a 4 inch smartphone that you use while walking to the subway, but that quickly unfolds to become an eight inch tablet while you sit aboard your train waiting for your next stop. The future is really exciting!
