Google Nexus 10 tablet from Samsung expected in first half of 2013 with new display tech

As we reported earlier this week, Google appears to be on track to produce a high-end Google Nexus tablet in the 10-inch class in partnership with Samsung. In a new article onCNET covering some of the new display technology, we are treated to a tidbit of information indicating the new device is expected to hit the market in the first half of 2013. To meet that time frame, Samsung will have to step up their display manufacturing technology.
The new device is expected to come with a 2560×1600 pixel display. On a 10.1 inch tablet screen, the PPI will be knocking on the 300 door. For comparison, Apple’s iPad with its Retina display at 9.7 inches has a 264 PPI and Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD is at 254 PPI on an 8.9 inch screen. If Samsung can produce a new screen as planned, the Google Nexus 10 device will likely jump to the head of the class for tablet displays.
If anyone is capable of producing this next generation screen on a mass production scale, Samsung is an excellent candidate. They are already the only manufacturer of both high-volume advanced AMOLED and LCD screens, although Sharp has announced they will start production of a 443 PPI 5-inch display. A push to up that ante in this fashion would not be a first for Google and its partners. This past year saw Google and ASUS partner to produce the Google Nexus 7 tablet in what many thought was an impossible time frame.
